When’s the last time you saw a concert at the VW show, let alone The Who? Those lucky enough to be going to Hanover next weeks, I salute you.

Went and saw Sloan and The Stills last night. Solid show. Never seen either before. The Stills really stole the show I thought, or maybe it is just me being down on Sloan. Its not that Sloan performed badly, its just they sort of looked and played tired. They still blasted out the guitar rock to keep the crowd (including me) tapping their feet and singing along. Â
Â
Both bands have that same retro-late-70s-canadiana sound. I don’t know how else to describe it, but it was a good double bill. Â
Â
Some random thoughts…Â
I was thinking after the show, when’s the last time I saw a band with 8 albums under their belt… it has to be over 10 years ago. Most of the bands I see are new and thus have only one or two, so you end up getting a full or almost full run through of the album(s) and maybe a cover or two. Sloan basically did a greatest hits set - which is appros since they’re touring to support a greatest hits release.Â
Â
Comparing drummers - I thought The Stills new drummer (Colin Brooks) was a machine. He hits really hard and was awesomely on time. Sloan’s drummer (Andrew) looks like he’s off beat, but its just his style, Anybody who’s even seen a Police video with Stewart Copeland playing, well Andrew pretty much looks exactly the same. He even sorta looks like Copeland too.Â
Â
Sloan is getting gray - both Andrew and Patrick are both sporting silver locks. It makes be feel old. As did all the 20ish kids in the crowd. Â
Â
Its hard to believe Sloan have played U of G 7 or 8 times before. I would have to say they’re definitely paid their dues for a Canadian band.Â
Â
Thanks to John for the free tickets - it was well worth the price of admission.Â
